The name Tools For Humanity may not be familiar to every crypto user but the name Worldcoin certainly is. In fact, the former is a developer of the latter, having been responsible for World ID which forms a key component of the Worldcoin project. Now, World ID is set to be integrated into another crypto project – Kresus, the web3 SuperApp. In return, Kresus will provide technical and strategic support to Tools For Humanity.
World ID Does Web3
World ID – or rather World ID 2.0 as the latest iteration is known – isn’t just for Worldcoin. It’s a universal identity solution that’s being integrated into applications of all kinds, both web2 as well as web3. Kresus is a web3 wallet and portal to all things crypto whose chief claim to fame is that it dispenses with the need for a seed phrase. Its decision to dispense with the cumbersome 12-word mnemonic hasn’t come at the expense of security however, since Kresus has found better ways to secure its wallet.
Up until now, Kresus has utilized features such as social login like Google or Apple to allow users to sign into its non-custodial wallet, stiffened with a secondary authentication layer. But having now announced a strategic partnership with Tools For Humanity, Kresus will be providing another way for users to authenticate and this one will support more than merely wallet authentication.
One App to Do It All
The idea of a single app that can do it all isn’t new; Elon Musk long envisaged this dream when he purchased X.com years ago, long before he’d even gotten his hands on Twitter. The social network, now well on its way to becoming fully rebranded as X, has yet to gain the universal functionality, including payments, that Musk has long wished for. But in other domains, other developers have been focused on their own take on the One App.
For Kresus, this vision takes the form of the SuperApp which is designed to serve as a gateway to web3. Once you’ve installed the Kresus app and signed in, the idea is that you don’t have to venture anywhere else because there’s no need to: all of your crypto needs can be found under one roof. Kresus has started by focusing on UX and security, with the goal of adding further features and integrations over time.
As Kresus Labs Founder Trevor Traina explains, “The goal of Kresus has always been to offer a tool for everyone to benefit from the blockchain.” Traina is adamant that “This is more than just dabbling in crypto since identity touches on all future use cases of web3 technologies.” Nail the identity part, in other words, and everything else will follow. With Tools For Humanity providing direct assistance with the World ID integration, the latest addition to the Kresus SuperApp should seamlessly slot in.
Security Meets Privacy
Worldcoin, where Tools For Humanity’s World ID gained its fame, was designed to support Proof of Personhood: the ability for an individual to demonstrate that they are who they purport to be while retaining their right to privacy. It’s basically a fancier version of a DID, whereby the identity data remains on the user’s device rather than the app developer’s servers.
By supporting the transition away from centralized databases, which are a honeypot to hackers, solutions such as World ID are a trojan horse for web3 technology. As more developers such as Kresus integrate its Proof of Personhood into their applications, it will strengthen the case for DID being implemented as an alternative to traditional KYC.
