Sony Block Solutions Labs (Sony BSL), has unveiled its blockchain platform Soneium. Sony announced the blockchain mainnet launch through a press release dated Jan. 14, 2025.
Soneium is a layer 2 (L2) blockchain network built on Ethereum. The platform was developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs (Sony BSL) which is a collaboration between Sony Group and Startale Labs.
Through the platform, Sony aims to provide users with an ecosystem that is not only decentralized but also user-centric. This platform will also ease entry into web3 by allowing developers to create decentralized applications (dApps).
Soneium’s Successful Testnet Phase
The recent launch by Sony BSL comes after a successful testing phase “Soneium Minato”. This testnet, which began in August 2024, has lasted several months and involved more than 15 million users. Additionally, the platform achieved an impressive number of transactions throughout the testing phase recording over 47 million transactions.
According to the official press release, the testnet was open to everyone. Developers and creators had a chance to test the blockchain’s specifications before proceeding to the production environment where they successfully released their apps on Soneium Minato.
Developers have built several applications on Soneium Minato. This includes the 32 projects picked from the “Soneium Spark” incubation program which was launched in September 2024. “Numerous other applications have been developed by independent creators. Entertainment apps such as games, NFT, and social apps have been launched along with financial and other apps,” Sony announced.
Blockscout data indicates that Soneium currently has a total of 6.83 million blocks. The platform is also averaging 2 seconds in block time. Its total contracts have also surpassed 7.3 million indicating that the blockchain holds immense potential.
Sony Group’s Commitment to Innovative Technology
Sony Group is highly committed to ensure that it changes the web3 sector for good with innovative solutions. The group strongly believes that web3 is still too complex and lacks “killer apps” to ensure complete decentralization, hence its focus to simplify and provide the industry with comprehensive solutions like Soneium.
“We aim to provide use cases that creators and fans can benefit from through comprehensive solutions in the new Internet era of Web3,” read the press release. Additionally, Sota Watanabe, the Director at Sony Block Solutions Labs, has echoed the group’s vision to develop web3 adoption.
Watanabe stated, “Our vision with Soneium is simple but ambitious: to build an open internet where creativity flows freely and fairly, and to empower the next wave of users to embrace web3.” Furthermore, Sony has built Soneium to promote innovation and collaboration across the globe.

The Fan Marketing Platform, which is provided by SNFT Inc, will serve as a tool for creators, brands, and enterprises that wish to use NFTs to reward their fans or use data analysis to optimize their marketing strategies.
On the other hand, the S.BLOX crypto asset exchange service is provided by S.BLOX Inc. The service will allow creators and brands to explore new opportunities. The firm aims to drive innovation across the Soneium ecosystem through the service.
By launching the Soneium Mainnet, Fan Marketing Platform and S.BLOX, Soneium aims to empower creators, fans and communities through an ecosystem that goes beyond boundaries.
