Blockchain payments firm Ripple Labs has created a nonprofit that is trying to educate people about how digital assets can serve an individual and business.
Launched on March 5, the National Cryptocurrency Association (NCA) is touting itself as a channel to share adoption stories, and the people of America to serve as a source of information on how crypto space is evolving.
Ripple’s chief legal officer Stuart Alderoty will stay on as the company’s lawyer while also taking up the mantle to lead the NCA as its first president. Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse said the firm would fund the initiative with $50 million in grant.
NCA’s Role in Legislative and Regulatory Awareness
Its official website has stated that it wishes to explain cryptocurrency use cases in everyday users by promoting the real world use of the same. The organization has not made a public announcement that its function would take it into the realm of political advocacy, but its mission includes maintaining the public informed on legislative and regulatory developments that could have an impact on the industry.
It should stand out that Ripple has been involved in politics itself. The company donated $45 million to the Fairshake political action committee aimed at influencing crypto policy in the US. Alderoty also personally contributed $300,000 to a Donald Trump committee. Later they both appeared at official events in Washington, D.C, after taking part in a private meeting with Trump, at Mar-a-Lago, in January.
A 501(c)(4) nonprofit that allows for unlimited donations from corporations and individuals without donor disclosure, the NCA has been registered. Such organizations may do lobbying, issue advocacy and political activities.
Trump’s Surprising Proposal: XRP in National Crypto Stockpile
NCA’s buzz comes at a time when the Trump administration is introducing major shifts in regulation. Recently, the SEC has shut down long standing investigations and enforcement actions against crypto companies, including Coinbase, Cumberland DRW, and Consensys. The regulator has, however, not ruled to reverse its stance on a $125 million judgment against Ripple.
Garlinghouse and Alderoty remain connected in the U.S. government. Indeed, Ripple CEO Chris Larsen is scheduled for a March 7 crypto summit at the White House, a sign that industry leaders are continuing to speak to policymakers.
However, Trump recently took an extremely surprising turn with his plans to have Ripple’s XRP coin included in five other cryptocurrencies in his proposed national crypto stockpile. There has been debate among legal experts and financial analysts as to whether the proposal is legal and what economic impact it might have.
With further involvement in both the public and political realms, establishing the NCA further demonstrates Ripple’s role in defining the future of cryptocurrency in the United States. It will be seen if the nonprofit becomes a large lobbying group or a big educational initiative.
