The Indian government has tightened regulations on artificial intelligence systems before they are launched publicly.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced on March 2nd that AI platforms must now seek permission from the government before releasing any new AI product in the country. This move signals a shift towards more rigorous oversight of AI technology to protect the public.
All intermediaries have been instructed to comply immediately and report back within 15 days. The advisory also recommends labeling AI-generated content with metadata to identify its creator and origin, to combat misinformation and deepfakes. “You don’t do that with cars or microprocessors. Why is that for such a transformative tech like AI there are no guardrails between what is in the lab and what goes out to the public,” said Chandrasekhar.
Moreover, companies can still release AI systems in beta testing, but must explicitly notify users that the platform is error-prone and obtain their consent. The government aims to balance innovation and responsible AI deployment.
