The Ethereum development team decided to end Holesky testnet services in September 2025 because of validation problems during Pectra upgrade testing and network optimizer departure. The Ethereum Foundation made this choice because Holesky no longer offered reliable testing options as stated in their latest blog publication.
Since Holesky stays online developers should avoid running exit tests on it because excessive waiting time slows down every process. The Hoodi testnet configured for Pectra on March 26 will replace Holesky for validator exit testing. Before its permanent closure Holesky will function as usual for testing features such as deposits and consolidations related to the Pectra version.
Ethereum Moves to Hoodi
Holesky needed to be ended because Pectra upgrade tests created severe problems that made most validators quit. The restored testnet cannot be used for further validator exit evaluations due to the long time needed to get rid of all exited validators. The long-term issue made it hard to test validator exits properly which moved developers toward Hoodi as their priority.
Since its introduction in September 2023 Holesky has tested Ethereum network updates throughout the last two years. The testing community may turn to Holesky after its September 30 expiration because discussions continue on its available options including protocol-level tests. As of now validators will stop using this environment for their tests in favor of other options.
Ethereum takes steps to simplify its testing system by removing Holesky from service. During the last few years Ethereum developers have permanently shut down multiple major testnets including Kiln, Rinkeby, Ropsten and Goerli. Ethereum announced Hoodi as its latest testnet to match its dedication to running modern testing facilities.
Ethereum developers are dedicated to creating easy network changes before moving into new work. Validation tests on Hoodi will produce better results compared to the previous testing environment. Pectra development teams should begin using Hoodi now because Pectra will activate on the test network shortly.
As Ethereum evolves it needs maintained test networks. Holesky’s retirement proves a new strategy for network enhancement that simplifies the upgrade process.
